Baylor Donors and Alumni Take a Stand

In light of all of the negative publicity that Baylor University has received following the ongoing allegations of sexual-assault on the campus, influential alumni and key donors have formed a nonprofit group to demand and to oversee the overhaul of Baylor’s Board of Regents. Julie Hillrichs, spokesperson for Bears for Leadership Reform, asserted: “I cannot stress enough, it’s not about football . . . This is about women who have been sexually assaulted on this campus. We need to have total accountability and transparency.” [read more]

Upcoming Changes for ACT Writing

All of the sub-tests on the ACT are scored on a perfect score of 36 with the exception of the writing component, which will change to a 1-12 score. Some are concerned that this move will cause confusion with a population that is used to the 1-36 scale, but there is an explanation on the score report for anyone interested in reading about the new score. New Federal Rule Will Avert Deportation for Thousands of Students

Foreign students in science and technology will be able to extend their stay in the United States, under a new rule to be published by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security this week. The regulation will be welcome relief to some 34,000 students — as well as to colleges and employers — who could have been forced to leave the country this spring because of a legal challenge to a program, Optional Practical Training, that allows them to work in the United States after graduation. Depression High Among College Athletes

Researchers at Drexel University, Kean University, and the College of New Jersey published an article in the British Journal of Sports Medicine reporting that 25% of college athletes suffer from depression.  These results concur with other tests conducted by the NCAA.  Responding to the findings of the NCAA study, the NCAA released a document outlining the best practices for dealing with athletes in need of mental-health care. The Coalition is developing a free platform of online tools to streamline the experience of applying to college. Rape Charges on College Campuses Lack Resolution

40 years ago the US Congress passed the Gender Equity in Education Act also known as Title IX.  Although most people think of Title IX in terms of equal athletic opportunities, the law covers all aspects of a school’s educational experience including the way sexual assault and harassment charges are handled on the college campus.  Federal investigators are now examining more than 250 cases that remain unresolved.  Since 2011 only 19% of the cases reported on college campuses have been resolved.  [Read more]
